“LET NOT THY WINGED DAYS, BE SPENT IN VAIN”: DR. KALAM
11 February 2010 was a unique day for Stella Maris College. There was excitement all around. Dressed in their best, the students were anxiously waiting for 4 o’clock. The reason? A visit by one of the most loved Presidents of all times, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. He had graciously accepted the invitation to participate in an interactive session with the students. A huge crowd had gathered in front of the OAT which saw unprecedented security. The delay in the commencement of the program did not dampen the spirits of the audience as they welcomed him with warmth and affection. The program began with prayer. The Principal, Dr. Sr. Jasintha Quadras, f.m.m. welcomed the Chief Guest and gave a brief history of his inspiring life. Dr. (Sr.) Helen Vincent, f.m.m., Sr. Susan, f.m.m. and Dr. (Sr.) Colleen North, f.m.m. presented a shawl and a painting as a token of our love and appreciation to the former President.
Dr. Kalam addressed the students with fondness and called them all his ‘friends’. He talked about righteousness and importance of time. He expressed his delight on seeing the nation being run by women. His confidence over the leadership qualities of Stella Marians thrilled all the young women present!
Dr.Kalam advised the students to emulate the traits possessed by achievers in various fields and recommended a four point success mantra that consisted of having an aim in life before 20 years of age, acquiring knowledge continuously, working hard towards the aim and having the perseverance to defeat the problem and to succeed in life. He also shared his vision for 2020 with the students and asked them to work in that direction. He ended his speech with an oath which was specially designed to bring about a change in the lives of women.
The minds of the Stella Marians were filled with questions! However, only a few could be answered due to time constraint. Dr. Kalam responded to the queries regarding the need to pursue science. All through, the audience listened to his words in rapt attention. It was an enriching experience for everybody and will remain etched in our memories forever.
