Chemical Influence

By Saptaparna , BE / BTech , IV Year

Final year students, Vipin Kumar Sharma and Neha Rani from the Department of Chemical Engineering have brought glory to S.R.M. University through their breakthrough performance in paper presentation competition in ‘Chemtechnik 09’, a national-level technical symposium organised by the Department of Chemical Engineering, Sathyabama University, Chennai. They were declared winners and were awarded a cash prize of Rs. 2000. The paper was based on a research project done by the duo on Corrosion of Steel & Instrumental Analysis in CA & CE Group, R & D Centre for Iron and Steel, SAIL, Ranchi, Jharkhand. Their project comprised of various tests for different samples provided by the company using X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), Optical Emission Spectrophotometry (OES), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and Immersion Corrosion Test technique. Also, analysis of the corrosion rate and tafel plot natures for provided metals were made which dealt with the corrosive property of metals, as corrosion is the interaction between a material and its environment that results in a degradation of the physical, mechanical, or even aesthetical properties of that material. Their main sources of inspiration were the faculty members of Chemical Engg. Dept and they added, “Our ideas were shaped by our all faculty members of Chemical Department who were always ready to guide us.”
