Shuru'09

Well friends, almost all of us, at some point of time or the other, have been confronted with the question: “Which is your most memorable day of college?” and with a touch of nostalgia most of us reply, “It’s my first day of college!” As a fresher we all were inquisitive about every aspect of our college; the campus, the professors, our respective departments and above all our seniors! Even now, as seniors, we are also ever curious to know about our newly arrived juniors, isn’t it? Hence, what could be a better way to know them than to have a “Fresher’s Party” for them? Well that’s how Shuru’09 came up! Shuru’09, an initiative by the students of SRM University, is a talent show exclusively for the freshers. Held on the 3rd of September, 2009 at the T.P. Ganeshan Auditorium, Shuru mainly aimed at finding the most talented, witty and presentable students among the freshers. All first year students were invited and more than two thousand students from first year had turned up for this grand extravaganza. Winners of the talent show were chosen through rigorous selection procedure comprising of seven events namely, solo dance, group dance, solo instrument, rock band, mimicry, instrumental (group) and ramp walk. After going through this tough selection procedure, Mr. Ishant and Miss Ankita were crowned Mr. and Miss Fresher respectively. Apart from this, mementos were also given out to the chosen 20 participants of the contest, “What has SRM University changed in you?” which was organised by the parents’ club of SRM University. Parents along with their wards had come to receive their mementos from the chief guest. There were also two host performances by Mia school of dance, The Deadly Dynamites and Nakshatra. Among the dignitaries present were our Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr. T.P. Ganeshan, Registrar, Mr. Sethuraman, Engineering and Technology Director, Dr. Venkatramani, Director of student mentoring, Mrs. Anuradha Parakkat, the student activity co-ordinator, Ms. Kalasridhar, the chief guest for the event, Dr. Sharmila and the judges of the events, Ms. Subhiksha Rangarajan who is a young, budding singer and Ms. Maya Shyam Sundar, who is a well known name in the world of classical dance. Of course, apart from the winners, there were many others who had displayed their extraordinary talents and got recognition. Well, it’s needless to say that, like every year, this year also we have got a batch of highly talented first years and we wish them luck for the four years of college and ,of course, for a bright and prosperous future ahead!
