CAMPUS BUZZ
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering
IEEE or Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is an international organisation, initially established in the United States. This year IEEE is celebrating its 125th year. So we thought there couldn’t be a better opportunity to discuss about IEEE and its work worldwide. Though this non-profitable organisation was initially established for the electrical engineers, today it’s a platform for engineers of all departments to share their views, ideas, learn, and get an exposure to the recent developments in the field of technology. It is even open to engineers belonging to the life sciences departments like biotechnology, genetic engineering, biomedical engineering, food process etc.
IEEE is divided into various regions and India being a part of the Asia-Pacific region (Region no.-10). Within India again there are various regions out of which the Madras region is one of the most active regions. IEEE has been holding regular workshops for various engineering departments. SRMites, who are members of this organisation, have been incredibly active and have taken initiative of organising numerous workshops and events. Last year they had organised workshops like MATLAB, FUZZY LOGIC, MICROCONTROLLER, LINUX and LABVIEW. They had also organised an event called TERZETTO (meaning three) which comprised of three rounds- crosswords, dumbC and quiz. UDAAN is yet another edifying event by the SRMites. For this event engineers and students from all over the country were welcome to present their papers. The response was overwhelming as more than 50 papers were sent for the presentation. “The judges had a tough time selecting the papers as all the participants had done a proficient job”, says Nishtha Chopra, student activity chairperson of SRM-IEEE and a 4th year EEE student.
Apart from this IEEE-SRMites are also planning to organise a national level fest in October’09. Industrial visits to various reputed industries and companies are also on the cards this year. After getting an overwhelming response to the workshops organised last year, the IEEE-SRMites have planned to have them again this year. So year 2009 will actually be a roller-coaster ride for the IEEE-SRM members. But in this excitement we should not forget to thank the people who make a tremendous effort to help us to become a part of such a great international organisation and built a platform for us to get exposed to the recent developments in the world of technology. Yes, I am speaking about the hard-working office bearers of IEEE-SRM.
They are:
Rahul Guha (chairman, EEE, 4th yr)
Vardharajan (secretary, EEE, 4th yr)
Himanshu (vice-chairman, ICE, 4th yr)
Nishtha chopra (student activity chair person, EEE, 4th yr)
Prof. C. Vaithalingam (student co-ordinator)
Prof. Sridhar (branch counsellor)
Students interested in registering as members of IEEE or inquisitive about this organisation can visit the official website of IEEE: www.ieee.org.
In fact IEEE is also known for recruiting its members in various well-known companies and helping them in getting placed. It also publishes a magazine from the US called SPECTRUM which also helps in creating awareness about the world of technology among common people and quench the thirst of tech-savvy people!
So friends, hope to see you soon, gathered under the banner of IEEE!
